It Happened One Bite
1978

As the story goes, Dan had collaborated with animator Ralph Bakshi on music for a new feature film. Although the film didn't happen, Warner Bros. released this album of songs written for the project, with cover art in Dan's inimitable style, and his "alternate" plot for the film detailed in the liner notes.

The songs range from tunes that would have fit on a Hot Licks album, to "action" soundtracks performed with kazoos, to a delightfully jazzy turn on "Cloud My Sunny Mood". Also notable is Dan's rendition of a 1930s romantic croon, "Garden In The Rain", lately re-revived by Tommy LiPuma protege Diana Krall.

Now available on CD in Japanese release, "IHOB" is a welcome addition to the collections of those who appreciate its charm. Several of the songs ("Crazy - 'Cause He Is", and "Boogaloo Jones" among them) are in Dan's current repertoire.
